FAQs about Xcalak and Costa de Cocos

Getting there:
Rent a car at the Cancun airport and drive down the coast on Highwy 307. Plan for a 5 hour drive from the airport to Xcalak. This is a drive best done in the daylight. We'll give you exact directions with your confirmed reservation.

Is there electricity? Yes, 24-hour electricity using solar power and/or back up generator.

How about a refrigerator? There are no cooking facilities in the cottages, you can bring a cooler with you.

Where should we shop for groceries? You may want to bring some things with you. There are many options for groceries on the way down in Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Sometimes fruit and vegetables are available from a truck that passes by the properties. Beer and soft drinks and limited supplies are available in Xcalak.

Is there running water? Yes. Hot and cold!

What about drinking water? Purified bottled water is provided in each cottage and replenished as needed by the maid. Ice in the restaurant is made with purified water too.

Is there hot water? Yes! There is hot water in all properties.

Is there air conditioning? No. But fortunately, the ocean breezes usually keep the bungalows very comfortable and there are ceiling fans.

Is Xcalak safe? Yes. There is very little crime of any sort in Xcalak. Of course, use common sense and do not leave valuables laying around or visible in your rental car.

Is there a telephone? Not for guests to use. You will be provided with an emergency contact phone number in your final confirmation. We recommend you leave this number at home in case someone needs to reach you in an EMERGENCY.

Are linens and towels included? Yes.

Is there a TV or stereo? There is a stereo/CD player at Costa de Cocos in the main lodge.

What’s there to do there? This is an ideal place to do nothing. Lie in a hammock on the beach and read a book. Sit outside at night and look at the stars. Visit a small local Mayan ruin or take a day trip to the excavated site at Kohunlick about 40 miles west of Chetumal. Take a trip to “Bird Island” in the bay or go bird watching on the beach or in the jungle. Go fishing, snorkeling or scuba diving right in front of the resort or make a day of it and visit Chinchorro Banks. Fish the lagoon for tarpon, snook and permit. Take a boat trip to San Pedro on Ambergris Cay in Belize. Drive to Chetumal and the museum there tracing the history of the Maya. Along the way to Chetumal, stop in the resort town of Bacalar, famous for its beautiful blue lagoon.

What should we bring? You might want to bring some items with you:

Ice
Snack foods, fruits, veggies
Soft drinks
Drinking water for excursions (it is provided in the bungalows)
Beer and/or liquor
A hat
Bug Spray
Sun tan lotion
Camera and film
Extra batteries
Comfortable clothing
Batteries for any machine you bring
Reading materials (perhaps a birding guide)
Audiocassette tapes
CD's
A good attitude

If Xcalak sounds like the next tropical adventure for you, call or email.
